Introduction

At the heart of serving God is the heart of God Himself.

What was your most memorable customer service experience? Now, if you were to (cheekily) ask the apostle Peter that question, what would he say? He might tell you this story from John 13.

A. ME … SERVED? (vv. 1-11)

Feel the drama: Peter was not just embarrassed but outraged (vv. 6, 8). Feet-washing was a dirty job reserved for (Gentile) slaves!

But there was a more outrageous act to come (v. 8) — Jesus’ death on the cross, which washes us clean.

B. ME … SERVE? (vv. 12-17)

How do we respond to such outrageous love? We cannot pay it back, but we can in some way pay it forward: by loving and serving others the same way Jesus did (v. 14).

This is a difficult command — remember Jesus washed the feet of Judas Iscariot.

Serving the servants of God is counter-cultural, inconvenient, and can cause you to get hurt.

But when He commands us to serve the servants of God, He also commands His blessing to accompany our obedience (v. 17)!
