Introduction

When was the last time you slowed down to savour a really good meal? Psalm 63 talks about being satisfied with rich food.

This sermon on Psalm 63 is the fourth sermon in our worship and prayer series. The Lord wants to ignite in us a longing for Him, grounded in reverence and dependence!

Do we truly long for God’s presence? What’s our spiritual appetite level? Appetite is a profound motivator. The converse is also true: the lack of appetite is a profound inhibitor.

There are four steps we can take to grow our appetite for God a little more:

A. LOOK (v. 2)

1. In the wilderness, David remembered looking upon God in His sanctuary.
2. The Lord invites us to behold Him — to gaze upon His beauty!
3. Perhaps our issue today is that we do look at God … but for only five seconds before we swipe Him away.

B. PRAISE (vv. 3-4)

1. David made a resolute commitment: my lips will praise you, I will bless you, I will lift up my hands.
2. This is because he grasped this truth about God: His steadfast love is better than life! God’s steadfast love is khesed, His loyal and longsuffering love.
3. Grasping this, we too will praise God as long as we live.

C. MEDITATE (vv. 5-6)

1. David meditates on his bed, through the watches of the night — it’s likely that he has insomnia because of his chronic stress.
2. His response is to meditate on the Lord.
3. Meditation is not about emptying our minds, but focusing our minds on the Lord. God invites us to meditate on Him, to enjoy His presence, to savour Him!

D. CLING (vv. 7-8)

1. To cling is to hold tightly. The same verb is in Genesis 2:24 — a man holds fast to his wife.
2. Do we hold fast to God in love, or hold tight to Him in desperation?
3. God longs for us to cling to Him willingly, not unwillingly, because we see that He is clinging to us.

Conclusion

God longs for your presence with Him!
