Introduction
“There are many who follow our Lord halfway, but not the other half.” – Meister Eckhart
In Matthew 3:1 – 4:16, Jesus models true obedience for us in three crucial ways! In other words, we can emulate three aspects of Jesus’ faithful obedience.
A. FAITHFUL OBEDIENCE IN OUR GOD-HONOURING TESTIMONY (3:13-17)
Jesus’ baptism: A testimony of true and absolute obedience to the Heavenly Father
“It is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness” (Matthew 3:15, NIV)
Honouring God through our testimony
B. FAITHFUL OBEDIENCE IN OUR GOD-PURPOSED TRIALS (4:1-11)
Jesus was tested by the devil in three ways. Trials are allowed by God to prove us and to prepare us for what is ahead.
Staying faithful through our trials
C. FAITHFUL OBEDIENCE IN OUR GOD-GIVEN TASKS (4:12-16)
Jesus, after hearing John’s arrest, retreated to Capernaum by the sea in quiet contemplation.
– the place where He began his ministry
– the beginning of the end
Working faithfully in our God-given tasks … which will culminate to the end goal.
Conclusion
“A long obedience in the same direction!” – Eugene H. Peterson
“My one life for your purpose Jesus, I offer up this day …”
