Introduction
Framing
Four foundational frames for discipleship from Leviticus
Two questions to ask:
A. WHAT IS THE COVENANT ABOUT?
- Covenant equals promise? Yes, but in biblical contexts it can mean “imposition” or “obligation”, when the covenant is between two unequal parties.
- Our covenant with God is a covenant of unequal parties: He is infinitely greater.
- Yet the infinitely great God has shown infinite kindness through the OT covenants: with Noah, Abraham, David, and Moses (our focus today).
B. WHY DOES THE COVENANT MATTER?
- Because it is a generous gift, a gracious choice, and a glorious destiny!
a. Gift: “… I bore you on eagles’ wings and brought you to myself.” (Exo 19:4b)b. Choice: “… if you will indeed obey my voice and keep my covenant” (Exo 19:5a)
c. Destiny: “You shall be my treasured possession among all peoples … and you shall be to me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.” (Exo 19:5b-6a)
Conclusion
But … we often do NOT choose God or keep His covenant!
There is a solution – God’s new covenant: Jeremiah 31:31-33!
