The priests had a very privileged position and role among God’s people. That privilege came with a price, a responsibility, a burden! Leviticus 21 contains a list of rules they had to follow. At first glance, some of the rules might seem unnecessary or unfair from our perspective. This leads us to ask two questions:
A. WHY THESE RULES IN LEVITICUS 21?
Answer: These rules were necessary because of the privilege of their priestly duty — it was the price they had to pay (Lev 21:6,8,12)!
The tragic story of Leviticus 8–10 helps us feel the weight of priestly privilege.
B. WHY DOES THIS MATTER TODAY?
Answer: Every Christian gets to enjoy the privilege of being God’s priest (1 Pet 2:9-10)!
As God’s priests we bridge other people to Him, and represent Him to a watching world.
This privilege is only possible because of God, not us. He is the LORD that sanctifies (Lev 21:8,15,23)!
But, above all:
We have a perfect and permanent Great High Priest (Heb 4:14-15, 7:24-25).
Would we place our lives in His hands, and embrace the privilege to be His priests?
