Introduction
“What if the main purpose for your money as a child of the Father is not personal provision, but giving to others and to your Father’s work?” (Paul David Tripp, Redeeming Money)
What is the Discipleship of Giving all about?
A. WHY GIVE? BECAUSE GOD GIVES ALL
“And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.” (v.8)
1. God gives us His surpassing grace.
2. We are enriched in every way.
3. So that we can give to others.
B. GIVE WHO? GOD CARES FOR THE POOR
“They have freely scattered their gifts to the poor; their righteousness endures forever.” (v.9)
1. Giving to the poor is an act of righteousness and justice, both of which reflect the character of God.
2. Giving to the poor is therefore a key part of our discipleship, not optional.
3. New Life is Covenant’s face and hands to nurture children, mentor youths and enable seniors in our community. Currently, short of $3.4 million from our 2024 donation target.
C. HOW TO GIVE? GOD CALLS US TO GIVE GENEROUSLY
“Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.” (v.7)
1. Giving generously is about giving intentionally, not grudgingly or guiltily.
2. Giving generously is about giving our first fruits, not our surplus.
3. Giving generously is about our attitude, not the amount.
Conclusion
“If you would be like Christ, give much, give often, give freely, to the vile and the poor, the thankless and the underserving.” – Robert Murray McCheyne
