Yesterday’s Covenant Loyalty Wasn’t Enough

Observation:

What significant observations can you make about Daniel’s faith journey
when he was old (vv.3-10) and as a youth (Dan 1:8-16)?

Deeper Reflection
The Book of Hebrews teaches three kinds of faith, which can be encapsulated in Hebrews 11:35: exploits faith, endurance faith and eschatological faith.6 I have been a Christian for 50 years. The faith in my faith journey has been mainly endurance faith. And such is our present faith journey in having a special-needs son, whom we love, with the daily emotionally draining challenges that we face, and asking from time to time, “How long, O Lord?” (Psa 13:1). At times, I asked, “Lord, have I not endured enough?”On my 66th birthday (14 March 2023), I had a prostate biopsy done. And on 30 March, I discovered that I have prostate cancer. I don’t usually follow the Devotional Journal to read what I have written. But God directed me to read the entry of 30 March, entitled, “The Heat of Adversity Increases.” It seems that what I have written, God has meant it for me. I think, it is God’s answer to my question, “Lord, have I not endured enough?”By Daniel 6, Daniel was a very old man, who was subjected to a severe test of his faithfulness to God (vv.3-17), more searching than the one he faced as a youth (Dan 1:8-16).7 “That Daniel faced this challenge to his faith in old age is a sobering lesson. There never comes a time in life when we can sit back and think that our faithfulness to God is so well established that it will never be challenged or tested again.”8 “Yesterday’s covenant loyalty was not enough. Today calls for a fresh choice.”9
6 I have written on this in Covenant EFC’s Devotional Journal 2013: 18, 19, 20 March 7 Christopher J. H. Wright, 125 8 Christopher J. H. Wright, 125 9 Christopher J. H. Wright, 126

The One with Supreme Authority

Observation:

Why did Jesus say to His disciples, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me” (v.18)?

Deeper Reflection
Verse 18 could be said to be the central premise of Christian discipleship and disciplemaking: “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me [i.e. Jesus].” Jesus’ authority is clearly in focus when we read the accounts of His teaching and miracles. For example, when Jesus taught the crowds about God’s Kingdom and its radical righteousness (Matt 5-7; 7:28-29), healed a man of paralysis and terrible pain (Matt 8:5-10, 13), stilled a great windstorm out at sea (Matt 8:23-27), cast out many demons from two men (Matt 8:28-32) and forgave a paralytic’s sins (Matt 9:1-8).“All authority in heaven and on earth” means that Jesus’ authority is supreme and all-encompassing. There is no realm of creation nor sphere of life that lies outside of His authority. Whoever has the highest authority has the final say. The words of the One who has the final say must count the most in any major decision that we make. For a Christian, the Lord Jesus has the final say in all of one’s major life questions about meaning, purpose and direction.Based on His authority, Jesus gave the Great Commission to all His disciples in every nation and generation, commanding them to “make disciples of all nations” (vv.19-20). As such, we are to respond in reverent fear and obedience to Jesus. At the same time, we can walk in full confidence as we go about doing our part in fulfilling the divine mandate, strengthened and comforted by the fact that Jesus is always with us by His Spirit until His Second Coming when we will see Him face to face.
Application:

How does the fact that Jesus has “all authority in heaven and on earth” affect the way I receive His commands and the way I conduct my life?

Write a prayer to God as your response from your meditation on and application of the Scriptures.

  • Pray for self
