Truth Matters!

Observation:

According to Jesus, from what are believers set free when they “know the
truth” (see vv.31-36)?

Deeper Reflection
We need a right view of truth, especially because we face an onslaught from the postmodern worldview.8 Why does knowing and seeking to uphold truth matter so much? • Truth is an anchor in an age of relativism. How else can we wisely decide in matters of right and wrong? In a world without moral absolutes, anarchy would rule and lawlessness pervade society. • Truth brings life and freedom to people. The Bible makes many truth claims. Some seem audacious.9 We are challenged to closely examine these truth claims for they shape the answers to life’s big questions concerning the meaning, morality and destiny of life. Truth matters! Fundamentally, we must decide whether Jesus is who He says He is: Either Jesus is the Lord and the Saviour of the world, or He is not. There is no third option.10In verse 12, Jesus asserted that He is “the light of the world” and that His followers will have “the light of life”, that is, the light that produces life.11 At the heart of Jesus’ dialogue with the religious leaders is His startling claim that His disciples “will know the truth, and the truth will set them free” (v.32). Jesus was referring to people who were enslaved to their sins. They will receive freedom from the slavery and penalty of sin when they believe in Him and abide in His Word (vv.31-36). Here, Jesus highlighted an important truth: the fundamental problem of humanity is not essentially moral; it is spiritual. People will be greatly blessed when they trust and follow Jesus as His disciples, understanding His will and keeping His word.
8 See footnote 3 of yesterday’s journal entry 9 For example, Jesus is the only way to God. 10 In logic, this is known as the law of the excluded middle. 11 D.A. Carson, The Gospel According to John (Grand Rapids, MI: Eerdmans, 1991), p.338.
Application:

Examine yourself before God: What areas of my lifestyle or behavioural
habits are currently in bondage to sin? Receive freedom from sin by
bringing them to God and asking Him for forgiveness and deliverance.

Consistent Daily Devotion to God

Observation:

What does verse 10 tell us about Daniel?

Deeper Reflection
For Daniel’s distinguishing competency and character, and commitment to ensuring that the king suffered no loss in his empire, Darius “planned to appoint” him “over the entire kingdom” (v.3). But out of jealousy, Daniel’s fellow-commissioners and the satraps attempted to accuse him of “negligence or corruption” in “government affairs” (v.4a). They could find nothing, because Daniel was “faithful” (v.4b). So, they planned to make accusation against him “with regard to the law of his God” (v.5). And they maliciously instigated Darius to establish a law that “anyone who makes a petition to any god or man” besides the king “for thirty days, shall be cast into the lion’s den” (vv.6-9).Then, “when Daniel knew that the document was signed…he continued kneeling on his knees three times a day, praying and giving thanks before his God, as he had been doing previously” (v.10). This was Daniel’s spiritual discipline with a structure of regular “three times a day”. He kept it daily. We can say that Daniel never missed his quiet time. The most important words in the verse may be “when Daniel knew that the document was signed”. They indicate the context of Daniel’s spiritual discipline: A discipleship challenge where his life was at stake. Daniel’s spiritual discipline was no mere religious ritual and routine. He could have skipped his quiet time “for thirty days” and be safe. He didn’t. Daniel’s spiritual discipline manifested his consistent daily devotion to “his God”: “he continued…three times a day…as he had been doing previously.” At the heart of this spiritual discipline was Daniel’s relationship and fellowship with “his God”.
Application:
