Deeper Reflection
In this part of the Magnificat, God’s servant Mary (Lk 1:38, 48) praised God for His mercy towards her personally. Mary also praised God for His mercy and faithfulness toward His servant, the people of Israel (vv.54-55). God both cares for the individual and helps His people. He works to bring permanent restoration and blessings to them. By His might, God reverses fortunes by humbling the proud and exalting the humble, and by filling the poor and emptying the rich. Why is God committed to care for His people who humbly depend on Him? According to His covenant, God remembers them and helps them in their need and times of trouble. In fulfilment of His covenant, God brings blessings through His Son, Jesus Christ, on all the generations and all the nations. All those who fear God, humble themselves and trust in the Lord Jesus will be blessed forever. Mary is a paradigm of those who are blessed by God.Beloved, may God help us to live in such a way that it is evident to all the people around us that we trust in the Lord Jesus. In our weakness and need, the Lord is merciful and faithful. His mercies are new for us every morning, and He will sustain and carry us through every struggle we face. The Lord’s faithfulness endures through all generations. It is not momentary or dependent on our merits. His faithfulness does not change based on how I perceive events nor how I feel. The Lord loves His people and is for them, and we will clearly see His mercy and faithfulness toward us.
