The Gospel of God

Observation:

How is the Gospel of God described in verses 1 to 6?

Deeper Reflection
The upcoming Lunar New Year celebrations give us an excellent opportunity to proclaim the Gospel in both word and deed. In our Devotional Journal series this week, we will be taking a deeper dive into the significance of the Gospel. What exactly is the Gospel? Some will say, it’s the message of the Four Spiritual Laws, Bridge to Life or the Three Circles. These are concise presentations of the Gospel, which are great to learn and share. But they are not the Gospel itself. The word “Gospel” is derived from the old Anglo-Saxon word “godspell” which means “good story”. It is translated from the Greek word euanggelion which means “Good News”. Why is the Gospel Good News? Mainly because, as we learn in verse 1, it is the Gospel of God!The Gospel of God shows God’s purpose through the generations – He promised the Gospel through the prophets (v.2) long before it was fully revealed. The Gospel of God also demonstrates God’s power – in the resurrection of Jesus from the dead (v.4). Even today, God miraculously gives life to the spiritually dead! The decaying and dark parts of our lives can receive His wholeness and healing. That’s great news!Because the Gospel is from God and accomplished by God, it is a Gospel of grace. By grace, we Gentiles (non-Jews) are included within the Gospel (Eph 3:6) and get to be part of God’s family. By grace, we are now ministers of the Gospel (Eph 3:7), who welcome others into the family. What a glorious Gospel!
Application:

Spend time today giving thanks to God for all that He has done for you
in Christ.

Prayer:
Our Father in Heaven, Your Gospel is a glorious and gracious gift to us. Help us to never ever take our salvation for granted. May we marvel more and more at the unsearchable riches of Christ, and be those who make Christ known wherever You place us. Empower us to live boldly and faithfully for Your eternal purposes. Amen.
Prayer Pointers:
  • Give thanks and praise
  • Pray for leaders

Consistent Daily Devotion to God

Observation:

What does verse 10 tell us about Daniel?

Deeper Reflection
For Daniel’s distinguishing competency and character, and commitment to ensuring that the king suffered no loss in his empire, Darius “planned to appoint” him “over the entire kingdom” (v.3). But out of jealousy, Daniel’s fellow-commissioners and the satraps attempted to accuse him of “negligence or corruption” in “government affairs” (v.4a). They could find nothing, because Daniel was “faithful” (v.4b). So, they planned to make accusation against him “with regard to the law of his God” (v.5). And they maliciously instigated Darius to establish a law that “anyone who makes a petition to any god or man” besides the king “for thirty days, shall be cast into the lion’s den” (vv.6-9).Then, “when Daniel knew that the document was signed…he continued kneeling on his knees three times a day, praying and giving thanks before his God, as he had been doing previously” (v.10). This was Daniel’s spiritual discipline with a structure of regular “three times a day”. He kept it daily. We can say that Daniel never missed his quiet time. The most important words in the verse may be “when Daniel knew that the document was signed”. They indicate the context of Daniel’s spiritual discipline: A discipleship challenge where his life was at stake. Daniel’s spiritual discipline was no mere religious ritual and routine. He could have skipped his quiet time “for thirty days” and be safe. He didn’t. Daniel’s spiritual discipline manifested his consistent daily devotion to “his God”: “he continued…three times a day…as he had been doing previously.” At the heart of this spiritual discipline was Daniel’s relationship and fellowship with “his God”.
