Success and God’s Presence

Observation:

How did Joseph become successful at work?

Deeper Reflection
This week we will be reflecting on the theme of Our Work in God’s Hands using Scripture texts taken from the Joseph narrative (Gen 37-50). Joseph was one of the twelve sons of Jacob.29 When he was 17 years old, he was sold by his brothers into slavery. At the age of 30, he became the second most powerful person in the whole of Egypt. A story of a man’s success despite major setbacks in life. The Scriptures tell us clearly that the singular reason for Joseph’s success at work was that God was with him: the presence of the Lord. Two key principles to remember: 1. Success and God’s presence go together. When God is with a person, He delights in him and is pleased to grant him success. This was the case for Joseph. Likewise for King David.30 After the Incarnation, Death, Resurrection and Ascension of Jesus Christ, God the Father and God the Son sent God the Holy Spirit to live in everyone who believes in Jesus.31 Thus, God’s presence is with every Christian to lead, guide and empower him to do God’s will for God’s glory.32 However, the Christian will need to submit to and obey the Holy Spirit for success and fruitfulness.33 2. Success comes from keeping God’s Word. His Word is truth and guides His people in His righteous ways. When God’s people carefully obey His Word, they will experience God’s favour, protection and blessing.34 When we consistently live out God’s attributes of steadfast love and faithfulness in our lives, we will enjoy favour and good success in the sight of God and man.35
29 Genesis 35:22-26. 30 1 Samuel 18:14. 31 John 14:12-18 32 John 16:13-15; Acts 1:8; Ephesians 3:14-21. 33 Galatians 5:16-25. 34 Joshua 1:7-8; Psalm 1:1-3. 35 Proverbs 3:3-4.
Application:

What can I do to experience more of the Lord’s presence at my workplace?

The One with Supreme Authority

Observation:

Why did Jesus say to His disciples, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me” (v.18)?

Deeper Reflection
Verse 18 could be said to be the central premise of Christian discipleship and disciplemaking: “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me [i.e. Jesus].” Jesus’ authority is clearly in focus when we read the accounts of His teaching and miracles. For example, when Jesus taught the crowds about God’s Kingdom and its radical righteousness (Matt 5-7; 7:28-29), healed a man of paralysis and terrible pain (Matt 8:5-10, 13), stilled a great windstorm out at sea (Matt 8:23-27), cast out many demons from two men (Matt 8:28-32) and forgave a paralytic’s sins (Matt 9:1-8).“All authority in heaven and on earth” means that Jesus’ authority is supreme and all-encompassing. There is no realm of creation nor sphere of life that lies outside of His authority. Whoever has the highest authority has the final say. The words of the One who has the final say must count the most in any major decision that we make. For a Christian, the Lord Jesus has the final say in all of one’s major life questions about meaning, purpose and direction.Based on His authority, Jesus gave the Great Commission to all His disciples in every nation and generation, commanding them to “make disciples of all nations” (vv.19-20). As such, we are to respond in reverent fear and obedience to Jesus. At the same time, we can walk in full confidence as we go about doing our part in fulfilling the divine mandate, strengthened and comforted by the fact that Jesus is always with us by His Spirit until His Second Coming when we will see Him face to face.
Application:

How does the fact that Jesus has “all authority in heaven and on earth” affect the way I receive His commands and the way I conduct my life?

Prayer:
Write a prayer to God as your response from your meditation on and application of the Scriptures.
