Deeper Reflection
THE ANGEL GABRIEL SIMILARLY APPEARED TO MARY, A young maiden betrothed to be married. His announcement must have been disturbing, as she was told that she’ll be pregnant with child when she had not known any man. Besides, this was no ordinary child. He will be “great” and “called the Son of the Most High (God)” (v.32). And the Lord God will give to him the “throne of his father David…and his kingdom there will be no end” (v.33).It’s usually easier to submit to God’s will when you understand what it entails; but it’s less easy to do so when the journey ahead is less clear. What will her betrothed think when he finds out that she is pregnant with child (though not his)? Will she forfeit her marriage and be ostracised by her community? As Christians, we’re sometimes challenged to follow the Lord’s will when personal sacrifices are called upon and obedience to the Lord may bring hardships and fears, whether real or imagined. In such times, truly knowing who God is and putting our faith in His goodness and grace will help us submit to Him (cf. vv.46-55). Also, God often uses significant people to encourage us: like an Elizabeth who is ahead of Mary in her lived experience. When Mary came to her, Elizabeth was “filled with the Holy Spirit” and remarked to Mary that she will be “blessed” when she “believed” that the Lord would fulfil His word to her (v.45).
