Deeper Reflection
IN VERSES 1 AND 2, THE PSALMIST CALLS EVERYONE ON earth to praise and worship God. God is the eternal, creator God – the great I AM who rules over all the earth, indeed all of creation! How should people approach God to praise and worship Him? With hearts of gladness, gratitude and adoration (vv.2, 4). With songs in our hearts that break out in voices and instruments of God’s praise! Because the Lord is good! God’s goodness is manifested in His steadfast love and faithfulness – two enduring and unchanging attributes – towards His people (v.5). His steadfast love endures forever. His faithfulness endures to all generations. Human history has proved, is proving and will prove the truth of these declarations made by the Psalmist.In verse 3, the Psalmist commands God’s people to know that the covenant-keeping God of Israel is the God of creation. God is our Maker and we rightly belong to Him. In this blessed knowledge, we can find rest in God, fully satisfied and completely secure in His ownership, leadership and care over our lives. When we know whose we are, we will know who we are! Brothers and sisters, we can have deeply anchored peace and security when we truly know that we are God’s own possession and God’s beloved children through faith in Christ Jesus! Such peace and security can weather all storms and prevail through all turmoil and uncertainties. Let us therefore entrust ourselves and all generations of Christians to the Lord God, our Good Shepherd!
