Personal Testimony of King Nebuchadnezzar

Observation:

How would the Jews who suffered from the merciless cruelty of the
Babylonian armies respond to Nebuchadnezzar’s testimony of the “signs
and wonders” that God had done for him?

Deeper Reflection
Daniel 4 is a long personal testimony of King Nebuchadnezzar: “It has seemed good to me to declare…” (v.2a). And the subject of his testimony is: “the signs and wonders which the Most High God has done for me” (v.2b).Nebuchadnezzar’s testimony was both good news and bad news. The good news was the pagan king was converted to Jewish monotheism, and “there is joy in the presence of angels over” this “one sinner who repents” (Lk 15:10). And the bad news was this pagan king was converted to Jewish monotheism. It was bad news to certain Jews. To some Jews this was too good to be true, but there were those who refused to believe it because they did not want it to be true.35 These were the ones who had lost their loved ones when Nebuchadnezzar and his “cruel” armies invaded their land and killed with “no mercy” (Jer 6:22-23), and they themselves were dispossessed of their homeland and now living in exile in Babylon. These were the ones who, so filled with hatred for the Babylonians, prayed, “O daughter of Babylon, you devastated one…How blessed is the one who takes your babies and smashed them against the rocks!” (Psa 137:8-9).Is there a “Nebuchadnezzar” in your life? People who have hurt you so deeply, that you think you have good reason to despise and even hate them, that you wish only for God’s justice to fall on them quickly. Understandably, it is not easy to forgive such people. But we begin with “God in Christ has forgiven us” (Eph 4:32).

Application:

How do I relate with the “Nebuchadnezzars” in my life who have hurt me
deeply?

Prayer:
Lord, You are full of compassion and merciful, and You know fully the pains that I suffer from people who hurt me very deeply. I know that I should love them even as You have commanded us to love our enemies and forgive them as You have forgiven me of my sins. But I struggle greatly to do so. So, strengthen me and help me to do that.

Consistent Daily Devotion to God

Observation:

What does verse 10 tell us about Daniel?

Deeper Reflection
For Daniel’s distinguishing competency and character, and commitment to ensuring that the king suffered no loss in his empire, Darius “planned to appoint” him “over the entire kingdom” (v.3). But out of jealousy, Daniel’s fellow-commissioners and the satraps attempted to accuse him of “negligence or corruption” in “government affairs” (v.4a). They could find nothing, because Daniel was “faithful” (v.4b). So, they planned to make accusation against him “with regard to the law of his God” (v.5). And they maliciously instigated Darius to establish a law that “anyone who makes a petition to any god or man” besides the king “for thirty days, shall be cast into the lion’s den” (vv.6-9).Then, “when Daniel knew that the document was signed…he continued kneeling on his knees three times a day, praying and giving thanks before his God, as he had been doing previously” (v.10). This was Daniel’s spiritual discipline with a structure of regular “three times a day”. He kept it daily. We can say that Daniel never missed his quiet time. The most important words in the verse may be “when Daniel knew that the document was signed”. They indicate the context of Daniel’s spiritual discipline: A discipleship challenge where his life was at stake. Daniel’s spiritual discipline was no mere religious ritual and routine. He could have skipped his quiet time “for thirty days” and be safe. He didn’t. Daniel’s spiritual discipline manifested his consistent daily devotion to “his God”: “he continued…three times a day…as he had been doing previously.” At the heart of this spiritual discipline was Daniel’s relationship and fellowship with “his God”.
