“Now They Found an Egyptian …”

Observation:

What is the significance of “Now they found an Egyptian in the field” (v.11) in the episode of David and his men pursuing the Amalekites?

Deeper Reflection
WHEN DAVID INQUIRED of God about pursuing the Amalekites, God spoke to him with a promise of success (v.8). “So David went” with his 600 men (vv.9-10). But did David know exactly where to find the Amalekites? No, he didn’t. When God speaks to us, there can be things that are only for divine action. This was the case for David. As David moved, not knowing where the Amalekites were, God led and guided him through His quiet providence: “Now they found an Egyptian in the field” (v.11a). David did not see God’s hand behind this at this point, but God’s hand was there. Out of kindness David fed the Egyptian who had gone without food and water for three days (vv.11-12). Quite naturally, David asked this man the basic social interaction questions, “Who are you?” and “Where are you from?” (v.13a). Then God’s providential hand became evident to David in these words of the Egyptian: “I am a young man of Egypt, a servant of an Amalekite…. We made a raid…and we burned Ziklag with fire” (vv.13b-14; see 1 Sam 30:1). The Egyptian brought David and his men to the Amalekites’ location (vv.15-16). Then, they “slaughtered” the Amalekites, and “rescued” and “recovered all that the Amalekites had taken” (vv.17-20) as God had spoken, “You will surely rescue all” (v.8). If truly God has spoken, we can rest assured that He will bring His word to pass in His way and in His time. For He who has promised is faithful (Heb 11:11; Gen 21:1).

Answering God’s Call in Vocation

Observation:

What significant observations can you make about Daniel?

Deeper Reflection
Daniel did not choose to serve Babylonian kings in Babylon. It was circumstances – a national crisis of his country – that compelled Daniel to be where he was and doing what he was doing. Daniel did not have the privilege, opportunity or freedom to pursue a career of his own desire. However, it was out of these adverse circumstances, that Daniel discovered God’s call for him: To serve God through serving Babylonian kings. And God gave him the specific competency to fulfil God’s call (Dan 1:17). After Daniel told Nebuchadnezzar about his dream and the interpretation, he was “promoted” to be “ruler over the whole province of Babylon and chief prefect over all the wise men of Babylon” (Dan 2:48).When Belshazzar gathered his wise men to interpret for him the inscription on the wall, Daniel was not among them. Daniel was not unknown to Belshazzar.59 He knew him as “one of the exiles from Judah, whom my father the king brought from Judah” and “appointed him chief ” over all the wise men of Babylon (vv.11-12). It was only when the queen mentioned Daniel to him, that Belshazzar called for him (vv.10-11). Belshazzar “deliberately ignored Daniel”60 . Daniel was sidelined. How do you respond to being sidelined? For Daniel, he felt secure. Daniel was secure because he had no ambition to climb the corporate ladder. He had no interest in rewards and promotion. Daniel said to Belshazzar, “Keep your gifts for yourself or give your rewards to someone else” (vv.16-17). But Daniel interpreted the inscription for Belshazzar. Daniel was answering God’s call for him.
