Man: In God’s Creation

Observation:

What does creation tell us about what the Creator is like?

Deeper Reflection
In our Devotional Journal this week we will be embarking on a series entitled “Origin and Design: where did we come from?”. To make sense of our world and our place in it, we have to start with the doctrine of creation. We must begin at the beginning! For in the beginning God created the heavens and the earth (v.1).Two significant implications arise from the doctrine of creation. First, the transcendence of God. The Psalmist David rejoices that “the heavens declare the glory of God” (Psa 19:1a)! The eternal power of God, even though invisible, is clearly seen through all that God has made (Rom 1:20). God is transcendent: He is lofty and exalted, and completely different from the world that He has made. We grasp this intuitively every time we behold the beauty of creation and our hearts cry out: “WOW!”The second implication is our dependence on God. This remains true whether or not we acknowledge it, and whether we accept or reject God! The world and all that is in it – including us – are His handiwork (Psa 19:1b), and He upholds the universe by His powerful word (Heb 1:3). Our lives and times are in His hands. So, my friends, do not delay. Let’s respond to God today as all creatures should – by honouring our Creator and giving thanks to Him (cf. Rom 1:21). Let’s come to Him in thanksgiving for all that He is and all that He does. And let’s remember that it is God who sustains us day by day, moment by moment, through all the hills and valleys of life.
Application:

Spend some time in nature and draw close to the Creator. Consider
what the things that you see tell you about God the Creator and
respond by praising Him.

Prayer:
O God, Creator of all things and King over all the earth, help us to magnify and exalt You, for You are great and do wondrous things. Open the eyes of our hearts, that we may be thrilled again by your glory and goodness. May we remember and rejoice that You made us, and we belong to You, through Jesus Christ our Lord and Saviour. Amen.
Prayer Pointers:
  • Give thanks and praise
  • Pray for leaders
  • Pray for significant people
  • Pray for those in need
  • Pray for self

Consistent Daily Devotion to God

Observation:

What does verse 10 tell us about Daniel?

Deeper Reflection
For Daniel’s distinguishing competency and character, and commitment to ensuring that the king suffered no loss in his empire, Darius “planned to appoint” him “over the entire kingdom” (v.3). But out of jealousy, Daniel’s fellow-commissioners and the satraps attempted to accuse him of “negligence or corruption” in “government affairs” (v.4a). They could find nothing, because Daniel was “faithful” (v.4b). So, they planned to make accusation against him “with regard to the law of his God” (v.5). And they maliciously instigated Darius to establish a law that “anyone who makes a petition to any god or man” besides the king “for thirty days, shall be cast into the lion’s den” (vv.6-9).Then, “when Daniel knew that the document was signed…he continued kneeling on his knees three times a day, praying and giving thanks before his God, as he had been doing previously” (v.10). This was Daniel’s spiritual discipline with a structure of regular “three times a day”. He kept it daily. We can say that Daniel never missed his quiet time. The most important words in the verse may be “when Daniel knew that the document was signed”. They indicate the context of Daniel’s spiritual discipline: A discipleship challenge where his life was at stake. Daniel’s spiritual discipline was no mere religious ritual and routine. He could have skipped his quiet time “for thirty days” and be safe. He didn’t. Daniel’s spiritual discipline manifested his consistent daily devotion to “his God”: “he continued…three times a day…as he had been doing previously.” At the heart of this spiritual discipline was Daniel’s relationship and fellowship with “his God”.
