Leading in the Spirit of Jesus

Observation:

What significant observations can you make about Jesus as a leader – as
“the Lord and the Teacher”?

Deeper Reflection
Christian leaders – in whatever settings – are to lead as followers of Jesus. That means, follow the way Jesus leads. Jesus leads at three levels simultaneously and holistically.Leading as the Highest: In John 13, when did Jesus wash His disciples’ feet? It was when Jesus “knowing that the Father has given all things into His hands” (v.3). It was when He was “conscious of the universal sovereignty conferred on Him by His Father, fully aware of His heavenly origin and destiny” 19 . Jesus washed His disciples’ feet as “the Lord and the Teacher” (Jn 13:13-14). God endows authority on Christian leaders to lead, such that their followers must submit to them (Heb 13:17). That’s top-down leadership.Leading as the Lowest: Jesus, knowing that He is the highest (v.3), He does the lowest: He washed His disciples’ feet (v.4). “Foot washing was normally carried out by a servant, not by those participating in the meal, and certainly not by the one presiding at the meal.”20 Jesus washed His disciples’ feet in six condescending steps (vv.4-5). That’s bottom-up leadership. But Jesus’ disciples “saw a rare unfolding of the authority and glory of the incarnate Word, and a rare declaration of the character of the Father Himself”21 . Jesus can be at the highest and at the lowest at the same time.Leading as an Equal: Jesus, who is “the Lord and the Teacher” of His disciples (vv.13-14), is also their Brother. After His resurrection, He called them “My brethren”, for His Father and God is their Father and God (Jn 20:17; cf. Heb 2:10-17).

Strengthened by the Divine Touch

Observation:

What is the significance of the repetition of the terms “strength” and
“strengthen” in Daniel’s encounter with God (vv.8, 16, 17, 18, 19)?

Deeper Reflection
When God sent His Word to Daniel in a vision, it was he “alone saw” the “great vision” (vv.7-8). It was a special privilege of divine sovereign grace. The vision was also a vision of God’s holiness and glory manifested in the awesome appearance of a heavenly being (vv.5-6). Daniel was so utterly overwhelmed by the divine vision, that “no strength was left in me” (v.8). The description, “no strength”, is emphatically repeated four times in Daniel’s encounter with God (vv.8, 16, 17). We may not experience such an utterly overwhelming encounter with God like Daniel’s, but we do experience “no strength was left in me” in utterly overwhelming adversities like being “afflicted in every way” (2 Cor 1:8; 4:8-9).When we have “no strength”, we need the divine touch. God responded to Daniel’s fourfold “no strength” with a threefold divine touch (vv.10, 16, 18): He “touched me again and strengthened me”. When we are so greatly afflicted, that we feel no strength is left in us, and yet we persevere in faithfulness, it is because we are being “strengthened with all power, according to His glorious might, for the attaining of great endurance and patience” (Col 1:11). Note the intensity and immensity of this divine power at work in us! This is the divine touch of “the surpassing greatness of power” from God (2 Cor 4:7-9). But we feel the physical and emotional pains more than the Spiritual power. The greater is our suffering, the greater will be the strength from God in us, and the greater will be our steadfastness in God.
