Deeper Reflection
Verses 6 and 7 contain an often-quoted prophecy about Jesus Christ⁴ . It speaks of Jesus as the ideal and ultimate Davidic King, descended from the line of David (see the genealogies in Matt 1:1-17 and Lk 3:23-38). In 2 Samuel 7:4-17, the prophet Nathan conveyed God’s promises to David. There, the offspring directly referred to was Solomon, David’s son with Bathsheba.⁵ However, in 2 Samuel 7, verses 13 and 16, God promised that the Davidic throne would be established forever. Here we see a clue that God was indirectly referring to a subsequent Davidic offspring who would live forever and therefore rule over God’s people forever as their King – Jesus the Messiah!Jesus’ divinity is clear from what was written about Him in the Old Testament Scriptures, as well as the New Testament Gospels: What Jesus did, said and taught in His life and ministry; the fulfilled prophecies about and His crucifixion, death and resurrection. Jesus is both the Son of God and the Son of Man, appointed by God the Father as King over God’s people forever! Jesus’ Kingdom will be established and He will rule it with justice and righteousness forever (v.7). Great is God’s steadfast love toward His people; His faithfulness endures forever! Therefore, He is impelled by His zeal to act on their behalf to deliver them from all foreign oppressors and establish permanent peace for them. The prophecies in Isaiah 9:1-2, 6-7 contain God’s glorious promises that have been fulfilled with the birth of Jesus on that first Christmas and will be consummated at the Second Coming when King Jesus returns to rule forever.
