Deeper Reflection
The Hebrew words translated “Wonderful Counsellor” can mean “a wonder as a counsellor” or “one who counsels wonders”⁶ . It may refer to the King’s ability to plan effective military strategy that will bring about victory for His people.⁷ More than that, it may also refer to the King’s ability to give wise counsel to His people for victorious living. King Jesus is our Wonderful Counsellor!In Psalm 32, the Psalmist David extols God’s goodness in answering his prayers. The Lord forgave David when he confessed his sins (Psa 32:1-5). And the Lord delivered David from trouble when he trusted in Him for protection during times of life-threatening danger (Psa 32:6-7). To the godly ones who faithfully seek God in prayer and draw near in humility and trust (Psa 32:6, 9, 10), He promises to instruct (i.e. to cause to consider, give insight), teach (i.e. to show and direct) and counsel (i.e. to advise) them with loving care for their journey ahead (Psa 32:8).God counsels His faithful people with great love. He instructs them with great wisdom and understanding. God’s perspective is unsearchable in breadth and depth. His power is unsurpassed in might and strength. The Lord wants what is best for us. He works to grow us in spiritual maturity. The Lord speaks to our hearts by His Spirit to counsel and instruct us. As the Psalmist David testifies elsewhere, “I bless the LORD who gives me counsel; in the night also my heart instructs me” (Psa 16:7). Let us draw near to the Lord and seek His counsel!
