It Always Looks like Almighty

Observation:

What does Daniel’s vision of the ram tell us?

Deeper Reflection
In Daniel 8, Daniel had a vision (Dan 8:1-14), and as he “sought to understand it” (Dan 8:15-19), Gabriel came and gave him “an understanding of the vision” (Dan 8:20-27). Daniel saw a “ram” – “Media and Persia” (v.20) – “butting” at the nations in all directions – “westward, northward and southward” (v.4). The ram appears to be an almighty power, for “no other beasts could stand before him nor was there anyone to rescue from his power” (v.4).Between 9 May and 22 June 1940, Germany under Adolf Hitler launched a remarkable assault, known as blitzkrieg – “lightning war”, on north-west Europe in the Battle of France. Blitzkrieg refers to a series of quick and decisive short battles to deliver a knockout blow to an enemy state before it could fully mobilise. And by this “lightning attack”, France, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and Belgium fell into Hitler’s hand within seven weeks! Hitler seemed to be almighty then.Every super-powerful nation or individual always appears to be all-powerful at its point of time in history. Then, egoistic presumptuousness creeps in. The “almightiness” is only appearance, not reality. This kind of “almighty” power results in “he did as he pleased” (v.4). So, every nation and people that had fallen to this ram were powerless and at his mercy. And inevitably, out of this comes arrogant self-glorification: “…and magnified himself ” (v.4). The application in our discipleship is: Do not think more highly of myself than I ought to think; but to think with sound judgment, according to what God has called me to and given me (Rom 12:3).
57 2 Corinthians 12:9-10
Application:

How do I deal with the human tendency of doing things as I please?

Prayer:
God, the flesh in me wants to follow the way of the world, to have power and do things as I please. But Your way for me is the way of the cross, even to be weak. For it is in weakness that I can experience Your all-sufficient grace and Your indwelling power mightily working within me, that I may know what “When I am weak, then I am strong” means.57

Strengthened by the Divine Touch

Observation:

What is the significance of the repetition of the terms “strength” and
“strengthen” in Daniel’s encounter with God (vv.8, 16, 17, 18, 19)?

Deeper Reflection
When God sent His Word to Daniel in a vision, it was he “alone saw” the “great vision” (vv.7-8). It was a special privilege of divine sovereign grace. The vision was also a vision of God’s holiness and glory manifested in the awesome appearance of a heavenly being (vv.5-6). Daniel was so utterly overwhelmed by the divine vision, that “no strength was left in me” (v.8). The description, “no strength”, is emphatically repeated four times in Daniel’s encounter with God (vv.8, 16, 17). We may not experience such an utterly overwhelming encounter with God like Daniel’s, but we do experience “no strength was left in me” in utterly overwhelming adversities like being “afflicted in every way” (2 Cor 1:8; 4:8-9).When we have “no strength”, we need the divine touch. God responded to Daniel’s fourfold “no strength” with a threefold divine touch (vv.10, 16, 18): He “touched me again and strengthened me”. When we are so greatly afflicted, that we feel no strength is left in us, and yet we persevere in faithfulness, it is because we are being “strengthened with all power, according to His glorious might, for the attaining of great endurance and patience” (Col 1:11). Note the intensity and immensity of this divine power at work in us! This is the divine touch of “the surpassing greatness of power” from God (2 Cor 4:7-9). But we feel the physical and emotional pains more than the Spiritual power. The greater is our suffering, the greater will be the strength from God in us, and the greater will be our steadfastness in God.

What is my experience of the Word of God and spiritual warfare like in my
