Growing Our Capacity!

Observation:

What is upon the heart of God for His people according to these passages?

Deeper Reflection
THERE ARE MANY SITUATIONS BEYOND OUR CONTROL, such as rising geopolitical tensions, dreadful military conflicts, global economic problems and the climate crisis, just to name a few. The greatest reality is people’s eternal destiny – damnation or glorification. However, this spiritual reality is masked by the by-products of humanity’s increased intellectual and technological capacities. Along with great economic advances, there is a self-absorbed pursuit of pleasure in the consumption of goods and services. With increased knowledge and power, people come under an illusion that they are capable of self-salvation. Human pride erases humankind’s need for God. Life devoid of a divine, holy Saviour can go on just fine. Ungodly people pass on their confidence in human ingenuity to the next generations, who increasingly are brazenly choosing to live in rebellion against God, mocking His existence and His called out people, the Church. The Church has been given a holy aspiration – for one generation to “commend” the works of the Lord our God and to “declare” His mighty acts to another generation (Psa 145:4). May the audacious culture of “authentic discipleship and intentional disciplemaking of a certain kind” mark future generations; so that the Church will multiply Christ-mastered messengers of the Gospel and missionaries to the world, and the Christian faith will flood every village, city and nation! As we emerge from the pandemic and look forward as a church, it is imperative that the current generation courageously and resolutely imparts the faith to the future generations. May we collectively determine to build God’s house for the harvest, so that our sending capacity will be greater than our seating capacity!
Application:

How will I courageously share the Gospel and resolutely disciple another in the coming weeks and months?

Prayer:
Write a prayer to God as your response from your meditation on and application of the Scriptures.
Prayer Pointers:
  • Give thanks and praise
  • Pray for SGI leaders: That more CG members will arise to leadership roles, thus multiplying our disciplemaking capacity
  • Pray for significant people
  • Pray for those in need
  • Pray for self

Consistent Daily Devotion to God

Observation:

What does verse 10 tell us about Daniel?

Deeper Reflection
For Daniel’s distinguishing competency and character, and commitment to ensuring that the king suffered no loss in his empire, Darius “planned to appoint” him “over the entire kingdom” (v.3). But out of jealousy, Daniel’s fellow-commissioners and the satraps attempted to accuse him of “negligence or corruption” in “government affairs” (v.4a). They could find nothing, because Daniel was “faithful” (v.4b). So, they planned to make accusation against him “with regard to the law of his God” (v.5). And they maliciously instigated Darius to establish a law that “anyone who makes a petition to any god or man” besides the king “for thirty days, shall be cast into the lion’s den” (vv.6-9).Then, “when Daniel knew that the document was signed…he continued kneeling on his knees three times a day, praying and giving thanks before his God, as he had been doing previously” (v.10). This was Daniel’s spiritual discipline with a structure of regular “three times a day”. He kept it daily. We can say that Daniel never missed his quiet time. The most important words in the verse may be “when Daniel knew that the document was signed”. They indicate the context of Daniel’s spiritual discipline: A discipleship challenge where his life was at stake. Daniel’s spiritual discipline was no mere religious ritual and routine. He could have skipped his quiet time “for thirty days” and be safe. He didn’t. Daniel’s spiritual discipline manifested his consistent daily devotion to “his God”: “he continued…three times a day…as he had been doing previously.” At the heart of this spiritual discipline was Daniel’s relationship and fellowship with “his God”.
Application:

How can I cultivate a consistent daily devotion to God?

  • Give thanks and praise
