Discipleship Journey: Downhill from Grace

Observation:

What significant observations can you make about Saul in these three markers (vv.15-16; 1 Sam 15:16-21; 28:4-6, 15) in his career as king of Israel?

Deeper Reflection
WE CAN LOOK at Saul’s discipleship journey in 1 Samuel from the perspective of the grace of God. Saul was chosen by God’s grace to be Israel’s first king. This grace of God is sovereign grace. “Sovereign” because it is purely divine prerogative, freedom, right and pleasure. And “grace” because it is unmerited and undeserved. This divine sovereign grace is portrayed in this way in 1 Samuel 9: An introduction of Saul – “Now there was a man of Benjamin…a son whose name was Saul” (1 Sam 9:1-2), and then the popping up of the first divine speech concerning Saul – “I will send you a man from the land of Benjamin” (v.16). But Saul had a serious problem: his heart was hardened against God’s grace. When God confronts us of our sins, His intent is not to condemn us, but that in His grace He may cleanse us if we confess our sins (1 Jn 1:9). Saul insisted that he “did obey the voice of the LORD” when God confronted him of his disobedience (1 Sam 15:19-20). We are solemnly warned against becoming “hardened by the deceitfulness of sin” (Heb 3:7-8, 13). Saul’s heart was hardened against God’s grace continually to the point of becoming fallen from God’s grace: “God has departed from me and no longer answers me” (1 Sam 28:6, 15). But we, in our weaknesses, can draw near with confidence to the Throne of Grace to receive God’s grace and mercy, with Jesus, our compassionate High Priest, by our side, sympathising with our weaknesses (Heb 4:15-16).

Answering God’s Call in Vocation

Observation:

What significant observations can you make about Daniel?

Deeper Reflection
Daniel did not choose to serve Babylonian kings in Babylon. It was circumstances – a national crisis of his country – that compelled Daniel to be where he was and doing what he was doing. Daniel did not have the privilege, opportunity or freedom to pursue a career of his own desire. However, it was out of these adverse circumstances, that Daniel discovered God’s call for him: To serve God through serving Babylonian kings. And God gave him the specific competency to fulfil God’s call (Dan 1:17). After Daniel told Nebuchadnezzar about his dream and the interpretation, he was “promoted” to be “ruler over the whole province of Babylon and chief prefect over all the wise men of Babylon” (Dan 2:48).When Belshazzar gathered his wise men to interpret for him the inscription on the wall, Daniel was not among them. Daniel was not unknown to Belshazzar.59 He knew him as “one of the exiles from Judah, whom my father the king brought from Judah” and “appointed him chief ” over all the wise men of Babylon (vv.11-12). It was only when the queen mentioned Daniel to him, that Belshazzar called for him (vv.10-11). Belshazzar “deliberately ignored Daniel”60 . Daniel was sidelined. How do you respond to being sidelined? For Daniel, he felt secure. Daniel was secure because he had no ambition to climb the corporate ladder. He had no interest in rewards and promotion. Daniel said to Belshazzar, “Keep your gifts for yourself or give your rewards to someone else” (vv.16-17). But Daniel interpreted the inscription for Belshazzar. Daniel was answering God’s call for him.
