Christian Service and the Gospel

Observation:

What has Jesus sent His Church (comprising His disciples throughout all
generations) to do as God’s mission in the world?

Deeper Reflection
Jesus was clear about His mission. At the start of His public ministry,25 Jesus went to the synagogue in His hometown Nazareth on the Sabbath day and declared that He was anointed by the Holy Spirit to proclaim Good News to the poor, liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed and to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favour (vv.18-19). Jesus had been sent by God to proclaim the Good News of salvation to those who until then had no hope of deliverance from their dire situations and were in desperate need of the Lord in His mercy and grace to save them. The Good News, or Gospel, was of Jesus Himself, the Messiah who has come as the way of the Lord in the wilderness for the salvation of sinners.26When the Church was likewise sent by Jesus to carry out God’s mission in the world (Jn 20:21-22; Matt 28:18-20), the Lord’s servants were likewise to be anointed and empowered by God’s Spirit to proclaim the Gospel to a dying world in need of the Saviour.27 Who will believe the Gospel and be saved? Those who humble themselves before God, confess that the godless way in which they have lived their lives in the past was sinful and wrong, believe in God’s Son Jesus Christ as their Saviour, and follow Him as their Lord all the days of their lives, looking forward to His return at the end of the age to take them to be with Him forever to see and share in His glory.28
25 After Jesus returned from 40 days in the wilderness where He was tempted by the devil to jeopardise or abandon His mission: see Luke 4:1-13. 26 Isaiah 40:3; 52:13-53:12 27 Luke 24:45-49; Acts 1:8. 28 John 14:1-6; 2 Corinthians 5:15; 2 Timothy 4:8; John 17:24; 2 Thessalonians 1:10
Application:

Recognising that doing God’s mission is a whole-Church effort, how will I
contribute to the accomplishment of God’s mission where He has placed
(sent) me?

The One with Supreme Authority

Observation:

Why did Jesus say to His disciples, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me” (v.18)?

Deeper Reflection
Verse 18 could be said to be the central premise of Christian discipleship and disciplemaking: “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me [i.e. Jesus].” Jesus’ authority is clearly in focus when we read the accounts of His teaching and miracles. For example, when Jesus taught the crowds about God’s Kingdom and its radical righteousness (Matt 5-7; 7:28-29), healed a man of paralysis and terrible pain (Matt 8:5-10, 13), stilled a great windstorm out at sea (Matt 8:23-27), cast out many demons from two men (Matt 8:28-32) and forgave a paralytic’s sins (Matt 9:1-8).“All authority in heaven and on earth” means that Jesus’ authority is supreme and all-encompassing. There is no realm of creation nor sphere of life that lies outside of His authority. Whoever has the highest authority has the final say. The words of the One who has the final say must count the most in any major decision that we make. For a Christian, the Lord Jesus has the final say in all of one’s major life questions about meaning, purpose and direction.Based on His authority, Jesus gave the Great Commission to all His disciples in every nation and generation, commanding them to “make disciples of all nations” (vv.19-20). As such, we are to respond in reverent fear and obedience to Jesus. At the same time, we can walk in full confidence as we go about doing our part in fulfilling the divine mandate, strengthened and comforted by the fact that Jesus is always with us by His Spirit until His Second Coming when we will see Him face to face.
Application:

How does the fact that Jesus has “all authority in heaven and on earth” affect the way I receive His commands and the way I conduct my life?

Prayer:
Write a prayer to God as your response from your meditation on and application of the Scriptures.
Prayer Pointers:
  • Give thanks and praise
  • Pray for pastors and staff: To follow and obey Jesus Christ as their ultimate leader and the Head of the Church, so that their lives and works will bring glory to God alone
  • Pray for significant people

  • Pray for self
