Begin in Prayer

Observation:

What can we learn about prayer from 𝗵𝗼𝘄 Paul prays and 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 he prays for?

Deeper Reflection
COVENANT EFC HAS ADOPTED A MODEL OF RELATIONAL evangelism called B.L.E.S.S. – Begin in Prayer, Listen, Eat with a friend, Serve a friend and Share your story. This week, our devotions will focus on these five components. In Covenant EFC we believe wholeheartedly in relational evangelism, because the Gospel is about God drawing us into relationship with Himself and with one another! Sharing the Gospel is not just about persuading someone else to agree cognitively with some Christian doctrinal statements. When we do any Gospel work, we must begin in prayer. This is because the Gospel goes forth by God’s initiative and through God’s power. Paul instructs the Church in Colossae to pray for the evangelists, that God may open to them “a door for the word, to declare the mystery of Christ” (v.3). Let us pray that the hearts of our pre-believing family, friends, colleagues and neighbours will be an open door that the Gospel can enter. Many of them may in fact be hardened to Christ because they are steeped in worldviews that reject God of the Bible – secular humanism, scientific materialism, postmodernism or other religious worldviews. These worldviews include many assumptions about life that are difficult to let go of. Therefore, it is only by God’s gracious power that hearts are softened to the Gospel message. As Paul exhorts, let’s also be steadfast in prayer (v.2), not giving up easily even when the prayers seem to have no impact. We can pray with thanksgiving because we trust in a good God who is always working out His good purposes!
Application:

Pray that God will grant you divine appointments and opportunities to declare Christ to someone this week.

Prayer:
Lord, forgive my prayerlessness. Sometimes I don’t pray, because I don’t believe enough that You hear and answer prayer. Other times I don’t pray, because I believe so much in my own goodness or greatness that I feel no need to depend on You. Stir up within me a passion to meet You in prayer. Move me to pray for the people that are upon Your heart. Amen.
Prayer Pointers:
  • Give thanks and praise
  • Pray for leaders
  • Pray for significant people
  • Pray for those in need
  • Pray for self

Consistent Daily Devotion to God

Observation:

What does verse 10 tell us about Daniel?

Deeper Reflection
For Daniel’s distinguishing competency and character, and commitment to ensuring that the king suffered no loss in his empire, Darius “planned to appoint” him “over the entire kingdom” (v.3). But out of jealousy, Daniel’s fellow-commissioners and the satraps attempted to accuse him of “negligence or corruption” in “government affairs” (v.4a). They could find nothing, because Daniel was “faithful” (v.4b). So, they planned to make accusation against him “with regard to the law of his God” (v.5). And they maliciously instigated Darius to establish a law that “anyone who makes a petition to any god or man” besides the king “for thirty days, shall be cast into the lion’s den” (vv.6-9).Then, “when Daniel knew that the document was signed…he continued kneeling on his knees three times a day, praying and giving thanks before his God, as he had been doing previously” (v.10). This was Daniel’s spiritual discipline with a structure of regular “three times a day”. He kept it daily. We can say that Daniel never missed his quiet time. The most important words in the verse may be “when Daniel knew that the document was signed”. They indicate the context of Daniel’s spiritual discipline: A discipleship challenge where his life was at stake. Daniel’s spiritual discipline was no mere religious ritual and routine. He could have skipped his quiet time “for thirty days” and be safe. He didn’t. Daniel’s spiritual discipline manifested his consistent daily devotion to “his God”: “he continued…three times a day…as he had been doing previously.” At the heart of this spiritual discipline was Daniel’s relationship and fellowship with “his God”.
