Serving

One of the greatest crises of authentic discipleship today is the crisis of Servanthood.

What does the word ‘servant' mean? We normally associate the word ‘servant' with ideas like ‘inferior', ‘underprivileged', ‘lowly', ‘poor' and therefore ‘undesirable'.

Thus, because we see servanthood as undesirable, many Christians don't want to have too much to do with it.

However, because it is 'Christian' to be a servant, we decide to have some of it just to be respectable disciples of Christ. Such a carnal mindset must go. We are called to radical servanthood.

There are four important principles of Christian Servanthood:

  1. Christian Servanthood is a powerful expression of radical discipleship (Philippians 2:5-11)
  2. The distinctiveness of Christian Servanthood is the call for the greater to serve the lesser (Mark 10:42-45)
  3. Christian Servanthood is expressed both in action and in attitude (Luke 17:7-10)
  4. Christian Servanthood is not a terrible punishment but a terrific privilege (1 Corinthians 4:1)

Come and serve. Every believer has a job. And every job is important. You can do your part to help build a Disciplemaking Church that is committed to Authentic Discipleship and Intentional Disciplemaking. Servanthood cannot be divorced from discipleship. Come and serve!
