Four
Agendas Those who commit themselves to discipling must commit themselves
to the biblical agenda for what a disciple of Christ looks like. There
are at least four biblical agendas:
Word Agenda
A mature disciple is to be deep in the Word of God. It is not just
mastery of the Word, but being mastered by the Word. This is the
most important aspect of discipling. It is when the disciple grows
in the Word that he matures, becomes biblically literate and builds
a firm foundation in God.
Love Agenda
The essential mark of a true disciple is love. Jesus said, "By
this shall all men know that you are my disciples, if you have love
one for aonther" (John 13:34,35). It is this sense of devotion
to God and to each other that sets the Christian apart from the world.
A disciple is characterised by love, because the essential nature
of God is love. There is no greater yardstick that God measures the
Christians by than this.
Fruit-bearing Agenda
A disciple of Christ is called to bear fruit. "You have not chosen
me but I have chosen you and have ordained you that you may go and
bear fruit, that your fruit might remain." Integral to the call
to disciplemaking is the call to spiritual multiplication. Paul said,
"And the things that you have heard of me among many witnesses,
the same commit to faithful men who will in turn teach others also."
Unless the disciple is moved by God, he cannot do the work of God.
Lordship Agenda
A disciple is essentially one who places the Lord above all the attractions
in life. This does not mean that he lives in recluse, abandoning worldly
cares. He may love earthly possessions, not of themselves, but as
a steward for the Lord. In Luke 14, Jesus says a true disciple loves
Him above everything, including his cherished relationships. Everything
is subservient to His Lordship. Surrendering our all to the Lordship
of Christ is the first step to true biblical discipleship.
