In October 2000 God finally led Covenant Evangelical Free Church (EFC) into her "Promised Land" at 10 Jelapang Road in Bukit Panjang.

After 25 years of wandering through theatres and restaurants, not only did God bless Covenant EFC with her own building, he also enabled the $14 million building project to be paid fully within six months of our occupying the building.

In God's redemptive plan, the Covenant of God points essentially to God's unfailing "promise" of salvation and blessing, fulfilled in Christ.

As a church, we uphold God's promise (or Covenant) to our generation. The history of Covenant EFC comprises several developments in church growth, which testify that God promises and provides.

A lack of space
doesn't keep this bunch of youngsters from church!!

In the good old days,

School at Telok Blangah.

  1970s

Covenant EFC began in 1978 when 17 pioneers from Emmanuel Evangelical Church (EEC) staked out Ghim Moh housing estate to form the Emmanuel Christian Fellowship (ECF). The group worshipped in the members' homes, and other locations including theatres and restaurants.

  1980s

In 1985 ECF called her first local pastor Dr Tan Wai Choon. The following year, a bungalow was bought at 721 Bukit Timah for use as a church. The congregation's size was 72. Pastor Edmund Chan took over the mantle of ECF in 1987.

  1990s

To accommodate a larger congregation, 721 Bukit Timah underwent renovation in 1990 while ECF worshipped at St Thomas Secondary School premises in Telok Blangah. In September 1991 ECF returned to 721 Bukit Timah. In October 1992, ECF was registered with the Registry of Societies and renamed Covenant EFC.

The number of worship services was increased to three in 1993 as the size of the congregation grew. In January 1995 Covenant EFC shifted to Regal Cinema in Bukit Merah. Later that year, Covenant EFC rented the Singapore Labour Foundation (SLF) auditorium when the cinema was sold. Covenant EFC borrowed Fairfield Methodist Church premises in 1998 when SLF was under renovation.

  2000s

In October 2000 Covenant EFC celebrated her first English worship service at 10 Jelapang Road in Bukit Panjang with about 450 people. In September 2001 we held our first Intentional Disciplemaking Church (IDMC) Conference. Covenant EFC also produced the books, Built To Last-Towards a Disciplemaking Church (September 2001) and Growing Deep In God-Integrating Theology and Prayer (July 2002), both written by Pastor Edmund Chan.

  Present

2000. Covenant EFC celebrates its first worship service at its sparkling new premise at 10 Jelapang Road in Bukit Panjang.

Covenant EFC has two English worship services (with a third starting in September 2003), one Chinese service, one Hokkien service and one Youth service. In addition, our Sunbeam Church for children has grown threefold in two years to her present size of over 300 children.

Covenant EFC celebrates her 25th Anniversary in September 2003 and will conduct a Pastors and Church Leaders (PAL) Conference on September 4-5, 2003.

God willing, Covenant EFC will continue to grow from strength to strength, and in grace and glory, as God leads her. Our prayer is that we will be a disciplemaking church that extends God's kingdom in Singapore and beyond, multiplying Christ-centred disciples who master their life's transitions through biblical discipleship.
